Capreolus Club welcomes those who share a commitment to sustainable deer management, conservation and the finest traditions of British deer stalking.

As the UK’s Premier Private Deer Stalking Club, membership is designed for those who value professionally managed stalking opportunities, responsible wildlife management and the companionship of like-minded sportsmen and women. Whether taking your first steps into deer stalking or building upon years of experience, the Club provides a trusted environment in which members can develop their knowledge, skills and experience.

Effective deer management plays a vital role in protecting Britain's woodlands, farmland and biodiversity. In the absence of natural predators, deer populations require careful and sustainable management to maintain healthy ecosystems. It is estimated that deer contribute significantly to woodland decline, affecting species such as the Nightingale, Willow Warbler and Blackcap, whilst also causing millions of pounds of damage to forestry and agriculture each year. Responsible deer management is therefore widely recognised as an essential part of modern conservation.

The Capreolus Club is committed to sustainable deer management and to promoting the responsible consumption of wild venison. Wild venison is one of the healthiest and most sustainable sources of red meat available, providing a natural, free-ranging food source while supporting the careful management of Britain's deer populations. Every animal taken by the Club enters the food chain, ensuring that sustainability and conservation remain central to everything we do.

Professional standards are fundamental to the Club. Applicants without significant demonstrable deer stalking experience are expected to hold either the Proficient Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 (PDS1) or Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 (DSC1) prior to joining.

For those wishing to begin their deer stalking journey, we recommend completion of the Proficient Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 (PDS1) delivered by the Shooting & Hunting Academy. The Academy is a UK Registered Learning Provider and an approved LANTRA and UK Rural Skills Training Provider, delivering nationally recognised qualifications for those involved in deer management. For those wishing to further develop their knowledge and professional competence, the Deer Management Certificate Level 3 (DMC3) represents one of the UK's highest vocational qualifications in deer management and is also delivered by the Shooting & Hunting Academy.

CAPREOLUS CLUB

Drawing upon expertise in deer management, wildlife conservation, firearms licensing, education, marketing and member services, the team works together to ensure that every member enjoys a professional, informed and personal experience.

EPPING FOREST

Epping Forest has a rich history spanning thousands of years, with a tangible human history running from 700BC to the present day.

There has been continuous tree cover in the Forest for well over 3,000 years. Originally one of 60 Royal Forests hunted by Kings, Queens and the aristocracy management of the Forest itself dates back to at least the twelfth century when Forest Law was introduced to safeguard the King's right to hunt game in the Forest.

Animals such as deer, wild boar and beaver would have once roamed the Royal Forest.

Today, with its diverse wildlife, woodland, grassland, health, rivers and ponds, much of Epping Forest has SSSI status (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

In partnership with the City of London Corporation, the Capreolus Club has an exclusive agreement to help conserve and manage the large Fallow and Muntjac deer population on numerous estates adjacent to Epping Forest and historically part of the Epping Forest Purlieu – former areas of Forest no longer subject to Forest Law.

The carefully structured management of the deer population maintains a sustainable number of healthy deer for future generations to enjoy and helps restrict damage to the farm crops of tenant farmers and neighbouring landowners;  relieves grazing and browsing pressure on woodlands facilitating the regeneration of the woodland understory and ground flora benefiting woodland birds, small mammals and a range of invertebrate and plant species. and helps reduce the incidence of Deer Vehicle collisions on local roads.

Bringing Your Own Rifle

Members travelling to the United Kingdom with their own sporting rifle can be assisted with the application process for a UK Visitor Firearm Permit, subject to current legislation and police approval.

Alternatively, members who prefer not to travel internationally with firearms may use a Club or estate rifle together with suitable ammunition, where appropriate and subject to UK firearms legislation. This allows overseas visitors to enjoy British deer stalking without the complexity of travelling with their own equipment.

Our experienced team will be pleased to advise on the most suitable option before your visit.

ADVICE

FIREARM CERTIFICATES FOR DEER STALKING

Thinking about taking up deer stalking but don't yet have a Firearm Certificate (FAC)? You are not alone.

One of the most common misconceptions is that you must already hold a Firearm Certificate before joining a deer stalking club. In fact, the opposite is often true.

Many people join Capreolus Club at the very beginning of their deer stalking journey. Members are able to participate in guided deer stalking using a Club or estate rifle, together with suitable ammunition, in accordance with current UK firearms legislation. This allows beginners to gain valuable practical experience before deciding whether to apply for their own Firearm Certificate.

For many members, joining the Club is the first step towards obtaining an FAC—not the final one.

Applying for a Firearm Certificate

Anyone wishing to possess a rifle for deer stalking must apply for a Firearm Certificate (FAC) through their local police firearms licensing department.

Each application is considered on its own individual merits, however applicants will generally be expected to demonstrate:

• A genuine good reason for possessing the rifle.
• Access to suitable deer stalking opportunities.
• Appropriate knowledge, training and practical experience.
• Secure storage for firearms and ammunition.
• Good character and suitability to possess firearms.

Police firearms licensing departments consider every application individually and requirements may vary slightly between forces.

Membership provides an excellent foundation for those entering deer stalking and, where appropriate, the Club can assist with:

• Guidance on first Firearm Certificate applications.

Training & Experience

Although no formal qualification is legally required before applying for a Firearm Certificate, recognised training demonstrates commitment, safe practice and a genuine interest in responsible deer management.

For those new to deer stalking, the Club recommends completion of the Proficient Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 (PDS1), the UK's leading accredited deer stalking qualification.

Combined with practical experience gained through Club activities, PDS1 provides an excellent foundation upon which to build confidence, competence and experience before progressing towards independent deer stalking.

Existing Firearm Certificate Holders

Capreolus Club is equally suited to experienced rifle owners.

Many members already hold Firearm Certificates and join the Club to enjoy professionally managed deer stalking, exclusive events, expert technical advice, networking opportunities, guided stalking, access to the renowned Capreolus Club PLUS Deer Stalking & Shooting Syndicate, together with ongoing support regarding future certificate variations and renewals.

Overseas Members

Members visiting the United Kingdom from overseas may, where appropriate, be assisted with applications for a UK Visitor Firearm Permit, subject to current legislation and police approval.

Alternatively, members may make use of a Club or estate rifle together with suitable ammunition, allowing them to enjoy British deer stalking without the need to travel internationally with firearms.
